If You Do Not Verify Your E-mail Address
How to Plan Your Social Calendar
Evite is an Internet-based invitation system that I use to send invitations to my parties and other parties and events. I started using Evite in June, 2005 and it has made managing this social group much easier. If I didn't use Evite, I would receive over 20,000 e-mails a month from people on list RSVPing to various events, and frankly I don't have the bandwidth to handle another 20,000 e-mails a month.
I ask that everyone who is on the invitation list to create an Evite account, which is free. The obvious advantage of having an Evite account is that if you delete (accidentally or intentionally) an Evite invitation that I (or someone else) has sent to you, or you simply cannot find it, rather than writing to me and waiting until I respond, you can simply log in into your Evite account and all of your Evites will be there.
If you change your e-mail address, there is another advantage in having an Evite account. Immediately after you change your e-mail address, your old address is associated with the Evites that have already been created and sent to you, so any reminders and followups will be sent to your old e-mail address. If you create an Evite account and then associate both your old and new e-mail address to your account, Evite will send all e-mail to your new e-mail address, even the reminders and followups for the Evites that I have already created.
To create an Evite account, go to Evite's registration page.
If the link immediately above does not work, go to www.Evite.com. At the top right of the screen, it will say "Log in." Click on that link.
You will then be presented with a screen with two sections. The left section says "Registration;" the right says "Log in." Fill out the left section and then click on the "Register" button on the botton left of the Register section.
Evite will then take you to a screen that says "In order to send an Evite invitation or eCard, you must verify your account. Verify now." Click on "Verify Now." The screen will now say "verify your account. To verify your account, please enter the 5-digit verification code that was sent to you in the confirmation email."
Check your inbox of your e-mail account (your e-mail account, not your Evite account). There will be a message from Evite with a 5 digit verification code. You have two options:
Once you do step 1 or 2, you're now done, you are now an official Evite member.
If you never verify your Evite account, you can still log in and RSVP to invitations, but you cannot create your own Evite invitations or send eCards. I would recommend that you go ahead and simply verify the e-mail address you gave to Evite. If you don't, every time you log into Evite, it will ask you to verify your account until you do.
If you use Microsoft Outlook for your calendar, with one click you can add an event to your calendar. While you are viewing the invitation, on the left (you may have to scroll down) will be Guest Options. The last option will be Add to my Outlook Calendar. Click on that and the event will be added to your Outlook calendar. Evite will pick the correct date and starting time (assuming the organizer listed it correctly when he set up the Evite). If the organizer also listed an ending time in the correct Evite field, that will also be entered in your Outlook calendar; otherwise, you have to choose the ending time yourself.
Note that rather than pasting the details of the event into the body of the appointment, Evites simply adds a link. If you don't like this (I don't) and you prefer to have all of the details contained in the body:
If you're on my invitation list and you have chosen to be invited to all of the events I publicize (this is the default), you will receive a lot of invitations from me, let alone Evites you receive from other people. Assuming you remember to log into your Evite account on a regular basis, here is a method to plan your social calendar that I recommend:
This process works if you remember to log into your Evite account on a regular basis. (Since you'll be receiving Evites from me on a regular basis, presumably you think of logging into your Evite account as you receive Evites.) It also doesn't work for last-minute Evites you receive; for those, you'll want to process them soon after you receive them; otherwise, you will miss the event.
